Santaninha de Baleia and Mato Grande: A Journey through the History and Culture of Brava Island
The Festa de Santaninha de Baleia e Mato Grande, celebrated for more than 60 years, revives the history of immigration from Ilha Brava through street theater that addresses social and cultural issues.
In yet another edition, the Festa de Santaninha de Baleia e Mato Grande enchanted the island with its rich history and tradition. Celebrating more than six decades, the event relives, through street theater, the saga of immigrants from Brava who left in search of a better life.
The play Santaninha, with its engaging staging, tells the story of those who crossed the oceans and those who remained on the island. The work addresses relevant topics such as security, health, education and justice, reflecting the reality of the community and promoting awareness of social issues.
The experience was even more enriching for the reporting team, who had the opportunity to embark on a fascinating journey alongside Santaninha's crew. On board the boat, accompanied by the owner and the captain, we explored beautiful ports and unknown lands, immersed in the universe of the brave sea wolves who sailed carrying immigrants and dreams.
Santaninha de Baleia e Mato Grande represents much more than a simple party. It is a cultural heritage that preserves the memory of Brava Island and the immigration saga, connecting generations and strengthening the feeling of identity. By reliving this history, the community celebrates its roots and reaffirms the importance of keeping this rich tradition alive.
